2004 Hainsworth Ladies Scottish Championship

Posted on Sunday, October 17 2004 @ 21:00:10 GMT Daylight Time on yvonne_ewing

The 2004 Hainsworth Scottish Ladies Championship took place at the Normandy Hotel. Matches were best of 9 frames and the draw was wide open.

The tournament started at 2.00pm with Gaynor McHaffie cruising to a 5-1 victory over Scotland Ladies Manager Yvonne Ewing. Internationalists Juliette Ramsay, Sandra Diamond, Claire Dempster and Sarah Pollard all came through their prelim matches.

In the first round (last 32) our own Hustler struggled a little to begin with but secured a 5-3 first round victory. The biggest shock came when experience internationalist Netty Anderson was defeated by unknown Angela MacKay 5-2. Stacey Beattie defeated Shetland Ladies Manager Jackie Williamson 5-0 and Kathy Paton beat fellow internationalist Diane Colville 5-3.

At 6.30pm it was again time for the ladies session. Sandra McLelland from Ayr defeated the 7’s team captain Heather Stewart 5-3, Gaynor McHaffie continued her winning ways scraping past Orkney’s Rachael Sutherland 5-4. Gemma Keenan surprised many and defeated Juliette Ramsay 5-1, a great result for Gemma. Sandra Diamond came through a potential banana skin defeating ex Scottish ladies internationalist Inga Tait 5-2. Shetlands Amanda Cutt won 5-1 against Joanne McPherson from Inverness and Scotland Ladies Team Captain Linda Gillies came back from being 4-0 down to win her first round tie 5-4.

The last 16 and Gaynor strolled into the semi-finals with a 5-2 victory over Sandra McLelland (a much improved player from last year), Sandra Diamond put paid to Gemma’s ambitions winning 5-1, Elaine Campbell came through against fellow internationalists Sarah Pollard 5-3, Amanda Cutt beat Sharon Dyet 5-1, Stacey Beattie was 4-0 down against Elaine Stewart but managed to come back and win 5-4. Kathy Paton beat Angela McKay 5-1, Yvonne Saunders beat Jane Wishart 5-1, and Linda Gillies beat Sarah Jackson 5-2.

Quarter finals and Sandra Diamond beat Gaynor 5-4, Elaine Campbell played really well and thumped Amanda Cutt 5-1, Kathy Paton and Stacey Beattie got their match cut due to slow play with Kathy winning 4-2 and Linda Gillies was beginning to play well and beat Yvonne Saunders easily 5-1.

Semi finals and Sandra Diamond against Elaine Campbell was a great match, Sandra went into a 3-1 lead but Elaine dug deep and came back to secure her final place 5-3. The other semi final was a slow, slow match and again a ladies match had to be cut for slow play. Linda Gillies can play any type of game and won 4-2.

In contrast the final lasted a little over an hour. It was a closely fought final with Linda Gillies managing to secure her sixth Scottish title defeating Elaine “Hustler” Campbell 6-3.

All in all a good tournament for the ladies game and thanks must go to HAINSWORTH who sponsored the ladies event this year ensuring the £1000 prize fund.
