2011 Scottish Ladies Tour - Event 3

Scottish Ladies TourEvent 2 Final

As Cue Here had a function on in the evening at event two, the final between Linda Gillies and Yvonne Ewing was played at this event. This was a tough start for both players as they are fighting it out for the coveted No. 1 ranking position; before the dayís events there was only one point separating them. The match was fairly cagey whereby both players were playing positive safety and going for finishes when they were there. Yvonne won her first tour of this series with a very comprehensive 6-2 victory; a result which took her three points clear at the top of the rankings.

Tour Event 3 - Last 32

The first match in this event was Diane Colville against Fiona Herd; Diane was always in control through the match and secured a comfortable 6-2 victory. Becky Leckey played very well in disposing of Gemma Clyde in their last 32 match, comfortably winning this tie by 6 frames to 1.

Lynsey Selkirk strolled to the last 16 courtesy of a fine 6-2 victory over Shetland player Anne Irvine, a fantastic result for Lynsey. I was extremely impressed with the first round result for Jenny Lawson, she hammered Shetland internationalist Donna McComb by 6 frames to 0, fantastic result Jenny, well done.

Gaynor McHaffie looked impressive in her match against Angela Frain, winning this one by 6 frames to 1. Jane Doig had made the trip north and was drawn against Krystyna Goudie, good friends off the table, this by all accounts was entertaining to watch, and Jane secured a 6-2 victory to book her place in the last 16.

Vandana Hegde was up against newcomer Michelle Cohen in the first round. Michelle looked really nervous throughout the match and this showed in the fantastic 6-2 victory for Vandana. Terri Lapsley showed off not only her pool ability but new slim-line figure as she progressed to the last 16 courtesy of a fine 6-4 victory over Inverness player Karlyn Coghill, great victory Terri and well done on the three stone weight loss.

Katie Paterson against Sandra Bell was a match that each player had several chances to win and one that went to a deciding frame, Katie used her experience and booked her place in the last 16. Shetland player Rachel Sutherland is very difficult to beat when on form and from what I seen of the match it was played to a very good standard (Gemma even played some safety shots!); Rachel secured a 6-4 victory to progress to the last 32. Kathy Paton was very impressive and cueing fantastically well in her demolition of Kim Black, winning by 6 frames to 0, well done Kathy.

Last 16

Event 2 runner-up Linda Gillies was against experienced player Diane Colville in the first last 16 match, Linda put the disappointment of the earlier loss behind her and quickly chalked up an impressive 6-0 victory.

Becky Leckey set up a quarter final match against Linda after impressively defeating Lynsey Selkirk by 6 frames to 1. Jenny Lawson continued impressively at this event, her last 16 opponent was recently capped Scotland ladies A player Laura Colquhoun; Laura missed three blacks and Jenny took full advantage booking her quarter final spot with a brilliant 6-4 victory (no practise on a Friday night again Laura eh!).

Gillian Hayes against Gaynor McHaffie is always a tough match to call, from what I saw of this match; Gillian was potting fairly well and progressed courtesy of a 6-3 victory. Yvonne Saunders booked her quarter final slot and was, as usual, playing to a very good standard; she defeated Jane Doig by 6 frames to 3, well done Yvonne.

Terri Lapsley was another player capped for the A team at Bridlington and she showed why during her last 16 match with Vandana Hegde; Terri progressed courtesy of a 6-2 victory.

The result I was very impressed with was Katie Patersonís victory over Rachel Sutherland, fantastic 6-2 victory over a very experienced A team internationalist, well done Katie. Yvonne Ewing struggled throughout her match with Kathy Paton and found herself trailing by 4 frames to 2 through very good potting and play from Kathy. Kathy missed a chance to go 5-2 up and this seemed to be the spark that got Yvonne playing, from 4-2 down she booked her quarter final slot, winning by 6 frames to 4.

Quarter Finals

Linda Gillies was against Becky Leckey was the first quarter final, Linda went 2-0 up before Becky levelled the match (with the help of an in-off on the black). Linda then went 5-2 up had a chance for 6-2 but missed and Becky took another frame, Linda then closed out the match by 6 frames to 3.

Jenny Lawson took another notable scalp in the quarter final, she defeated Gillian Hayes in a final frame decider to book her first ever semi final slot, fantastic again jenny, brilliant to see.

Yvonne Saunders against Terri Lapsley was a very difficult match to call; it went as predicted to a final frame where both players could have secured their semi final spot. Yvonne held her nerve and booked her place in the semi final.

The last quarter final match was Katie Paterson against Yvonne Ewing , Katie looked to be in fine form which was evident in Yvonneís early safety play; Yvonne eventually opened up and booked a semi final place against Yvonne Saunders, defeating Katie by 6 frames to 0.

The first semi final was Linda Gillies against Jenny Lawson, Jenny will be kicking herself this morning as she had a glorious chance to beat Scotlandís most consistent female player with the match poised at 5-5. Jenny, whilst on the black ball in the final frame left Linda a difficult chance which she duly accepted to book her final slot. Another impressive match for Jenny, who on this display and showing some consistency at this level will be without a doubt one to watch at future events.

The second semi final was Yvonne Ewing against an in form Yvonne Saunders; a match that was a lot closer than the 6-2 score line as Yvonne progressed to her third final of the 2011 series. This set up the second final of the day between the current No. 1 and No. 2 ranked players.

The final of event 3 was a re-run of event 2, Linda Gillies against Yvonne Ewing with Linda hoping to redress the result earlier in the day. Yvonne stormed into a 3-0 lead in the best of nine frames (agreed between both players before commencement). Linda however had other ideas and pulled the match back frame by frame and came from 3-0 down to take a 4-3 lead. Linda had the match at her mercy in the eighth frame but missed a difficult pot letting Yvonne in to clear the table to force the final into a final frame. Yvonne broke the decider and they opened up lovely giving her the chance to win the match, with a break and dish Yvonne secured her second tour title of the season.

Event 2 - Plate

Congratulations go to Laura Colquhoun who defeated Kim Black by 2 frames to 1 in the plate final; this event is for players who were knocked out in the first and second round of the tour, giving them a chance to play more pool on the day and win some prize money (again this is 100% payout of entries received). This proved to be very popular and will be included in every event hereafter, albeit in different formats (14-1, speed pool, winner stays on).

Thank you to Gary and his staff in Cue Here for looking after the girls throughout the day as well as providing us with free scotch pies; it really is a fantastic venue for the ladies tour series. I am looking forward to Event No. 4 which will be held in the fantastic Hustlers on Saturday 29th October, 2011 with play commencing at 11.00am.
