2011 Scottish Ladies Tour - Event 2

Scottish Ladies TourFresh from our very successful trip to the 2011 European Masters where Scotland ladies A and Scotland Ladies B1 were crowed champions in their respective events, I was confident some cracking pool would be on display at this event. Event 1 champion Claire Dempster was in attendance trying to make it four tour wins in succession as she won the final two events from the 2010 series and also event 1 from the 2011 series. There is lots and lots to play for as can be seen from the provisional rankings (at end of Report), three players contesting for the coveted No. 1 spot in the rankings.

Last 32

Shetland internationalists Donna McComb and Rachel Sutherland were drawn to play each other in their first round match; Donna took an early lead before Rachel scraped it back to win in a final frame decider.

Andrea Reid against Lisa Dominick was a slow match to start which resulted in them being cut to best of 9 frames, Scotland B player Lisa Dominick won this one by 5 frames to 1, a good first round victory, well done.

Gemma Clyde against good friend Laura Colquhoun was a strange match to watch with both players having chances to win frames, Laura eventually stumbled over the winning line, securing a 6-4 victory.

Diane Colville looked to be playing well in defeating Jenny Lawson by 6 frames to 3; Becky Leckey against Sonia Tingley (event 1 quarter finalist) was a tough match to call. Becky started the match really well and steamed into a 5-0 lead, Sonia then started her come back, taking 4 in a row before Becky managed to close the match out by 6 frames to 4.

Kathy Paton against Angie Frain looked to be a tactical battle at points; Kathy proved too strong at this game and secured a very good first round victory by 6 frames to 1. Michelle Jackson was against Kim Black in the first round, from what I saw of the match Kim just didn’t get any running at all but all credit to Michelle who won this one very convincingly by 6 frames to 1.

Amanda Cutt against Gemma Keenan was a “battle of the potters”, both players looked to be cueing fairly well throughout, Amanda used her experience in securing a first round 6-4 victory. A brilliant match next, where Vandana Hegde was against Katie Paterson; both players played very well throughout and it was a match that fully deserved to go all the way, well done Katie in winning the decider.

Lynsey Selkirk was against Fiona Herd in the Last 32, a match that was interesting to watch, Lynsey came through this one by 6 frames to 2, well done Lynsey. Nicola Keenan was against the current ladies World Champion and Ladies Tour Event 1 winner Claire Dempster in her first match. Nicola tried to out pot Claire throughout the match which proved to be the wrong choice, Claire secured a very comfortable 6-0 victory.

Sandra Bell against Jackie Williamson is, as always, a difficult match to choose your winner for, the match was close throughout before Sandra claimed an impressive 6-4 first round victory.

Last 16

Event 1 runner-up Yvonne Ewing had a tough Last 16 match against talented Shetland player Rachel Sutherland; the match was poised at 3-3 when Yvonne took two quick frames to give her some breathing space and she eventually won this match by 6 frames to 3.

Laura Colquhoun played a fair bit better in her second round match against Lisa Dominick which she won by 6 frames to 0. A very good win for Becky Leckey in her Last 16 match as she defeated Scotland B player Diane Colville by 6 frames to 4, this was after she was behind for a fair bit of the match, well done.

Kathy Paton was playing well in her match against Gillian Hayes, a comfortable 6-1 victory, well played Kathy. Yvonne Saunders continued playing very well in defeating Michelle Jackson by 6 frames to 3, good to see you playing well again Yvonne.

Katie Paterson had an exceptional win in her Last 16 match against Amanda Cutt from Shetland; she held her nerve to secure a final frame victory, well done again Katie, fantastic. Claire Dempster defeated Lynsey Selkirk by 6 frames to 1 and looked to be cueing particularly well. This set up a tasty quarter final clash with Linda Gillies after she defeated Sandra Bell by the same 6-1 score line.

Quarter Finals

Yvonne Ewing was up against Laura Colquhoun in the first quarter final of the day, Yvonne took a 5-0 lead before Laura won her only frame of the match. Yvonne closed out the match by 6 frames to 1.

Kathy Paton was against Becky Lecky in their quarter final match, Becky took a 2-0 lead before Kathy slowed down the match which proved to be effective as she secured her semi final spot courtesy of a good 6-4 victory.

Yvonne Saunders against Katie Paterson was a good match to watch too, Katie played well but Yvonne proved slightly stronger and closed out the match, winning by 6 frames to 4.

Claire Dempster against Linda Gillies was, on paper, too close to call. In my opinion, these two players are the very best in the ladies game, anywhere in the world. Two of Scotland’s top female players for over a generation; Linda played very well as she convincingly defeated Claire 6-1, bringing her impressive tour victory run to a close. Well done Linda, a very good victory.

Yvonne Ewing was against an in form Kathy Paton in the first semi final; a match that was a lot closer than the 6-1 score line suggests, as Yvonne progressed to her second final of the 2011 series. The second semi final was a lot closer as Linda Gillies and Yvonne Saunders battled it out to reach their first final of the season. Linda managed to win the deciding frame to set up a final between the current No. 1 and No. 2 ranked players.

As Cue Here had a function on in the evening, it was decided that due to the time constraint, the final between Linda Gillies and Yvonne Ewing would be played during Event No. 3 (30th July, 2011).

Provisional Rankings

The top sixteen provisional rankings are as follows (please remember points have still to be added for event 2 winner and runner up (9 and 7 respectively)).

Event 2 - Plate
Congratulations go to Kim Black who defeated Gemma Clyde in the plate final; this event is for players who were knocked out in the first round of the tour, giving them a chance to play more pool on the day and won some prize money (again this is 100% payout of entries received). This proved to be very popular and will be included in every event hereafter, albeit in different formats (14-1, speed pool, winner stays on).

Thank you to Gary and his staff in Cue Here (especially Annette) for looking after the girls throughout the day as well as providing us with a fantastic venue for the event. I am looking forward to Event No. 3 which will be held once again in Cue Here on Saturday 30th July, 2011 with play commencing at 11.00am.
